the streets are slow and silent and the backyard is a big parade so i’m just sweepin’ up the garbage while i listen to the songs you play where everybody’s tryin’ but they just can’t get it straight! so i’m just sweepin’ up the garbage while you whistle all the songs i play
i keep changin’ my mind all the time i hope you think that that’s alright yeah, i hope you tell me that’s alright
Sylvia, get your head out of the oven Go back to screaming and cursing Remind me again how everyone betrayed you Sylvia, get your head out of the covers Let me take your temperature You can throw the thermometer right back at me If that’s what you want to do, okay?
Sylvia, can’t you see what you are doing? Can’t you see I’m scared to speak And I hate my voice because it only makes you angry
Sylvia, I only talk when you are sleeping That’s when I tell you everything And I imagine that somehow you’re going to hear me
River City Extension - “Standing Outside a Southern Riot”
I remember when I last saw RCE, Joe talked about how he wrote this song after or about (or something) a show they played in Richmond when VCU students rioted over the winning of a basketball game. I was at that show as well, and had to drive through the city at the very beginnings of the riot. Kids were running out in front of my car and I was so scared I was going to hit someone. It feels really cool to know some underlying things about the song. Anyways, I’m glad their new album finally dropped.
